Tom has lived in the Akron area his entire life. He was born and raised in New Philadelphia and graduated with honors from Kent State University with a bachelor’s degree in news writing. He then attended law school and graduated with honors from The University of Akron in 1988.
Upon graduating from law school, Tom worked for nearly two years with a Cleveland firm that represented many clients who owned and operated nursing care centers. In 1990, Tom started his own practice in Akron with several outstanding lawyers, including Paul Weimer and Judy Hunter. A few years later, Tom realized a dream to begin his own firm and launched Semple & Eicher with his law school friend and classmate Geoff Eicher in 1992.
Tom’s practice has two primary focuses. First, he assists individuals with estate planning and administration, including wills and trusts. As part of this practice area, he also handles guardianships and other probate matters. The other primary focus of Tom’s practice is representation of owners and operators of nursing care centers. As part of this practice area, he assists nursing centers throughout the entire state of Ohio with probate matters (including guardianships and estate claims), collection issues, property liens and foreclosures, Medicaid issues, and insurance issues.
Tom is a member of the Akron and Ohio State Bar Associations. He has been actively involved with the Akron chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association and served as the president of its board of trustees. He has presented continuing legal education seminars and has addressed many other groups, professional and lay, about estate planning for individuals with dementia and related illnesses. He has been an instructor at Kent State University. He is actively involved in youth sports programs.
